What is the Atmosphere?
The open network Barazo is built on, and why signing in with a Bluesky account works at all.
If Barazo is your first taste of AT Protocol, this page is the one-minute orientation. You don't need any of it to use a forum, but it explains why signing in with a Bluesky account works, and why your posts aren't trapped here.
One account, many apps
The Atmosphere is the open network that AT Protocol apps share. Bluesky is the best-known one, but it's not the only one. Barazo is another. They all read and write to the same network, so one account works across all of them.
That's why you sign in to a Barazo forum with a handle you already have. There's no separate Barazo account, because Barazo doesn't own accounts. It reads yours.
Your data lives with you, not the app
On a normal forum, your posts are rows in that forum's database. On the Atmosphere, your posts live in your own data store (a Personal Data Server) and apps index a copy to show them. The app is a view over data you hold.
So when you post on Barazo, the record is yours. Move to another provider, or leave the forum entirely, and your history comes with you.
What it changes for a forum member
- No new signup. Members arrive with an account they already have.
- Portable identity. The same handle and history follow you across forums and apps.
- A real exit. Leaving a forum doesn't erase what you wrote. You keep it.
